Manchester City is reportedly eyeing Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes as a potential replacement for the injured Rodri, who is set to miss an extended period of time.
City manager Pep Guardiola is said to be keen on the Brazilian midfielder, who is reportedly a key target for the club’s January transfer plans.
Rodri, a vital figure in City’s midfield, is sidelined due to a serious knee injury and will be unavailable for the remainder of the season. As a result, Guardiola is actively seeking a short-term solution to bolster his midfield for the second half of the campaign.
According to The Daily Mail, Guimaraes is among the players on City’s radar. However, Newcastle’s position in the matter is strong, as the 27-year-old recently signed a new contract that keeps him at the club until 2028, giving the Magpies a strong negotiating position with the potential to demand a high transfer fee.
Guimaraes has been a standout performer in the Premier League since his £40 million move from Lyon in January 2022.
Guardiola is said to have been impressed by Guimaraes’ performances and had attempted to sign him last summer. However, negotiations stalled due to a release clause that reportedly stood at £100 million.
Despite Guimaraes’ new deal giving Newcastle a strong financial stance, City is expected to pursue an approach to convince the Magpies to part with their influential midfielder. The Premier League champions are likely to sign at least one midfielder in January to ensure they maintain their competitiveness throughout the rest of the season.
I am really looking forward to this
